European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
