Shifting from Acclaim to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative responses to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
