This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
